Desolation Road-A Preview

Posted 10 Mar 2011 in Ramblings

Last fall I came up with an idea for a novel called Desolation Road that I was going to work on for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in November. Well it ended up that I changed my mind at the last minute and worked on another story idea for that month. I did finish the challenge but didn’t like the way the story unfolded so I just put that away to look at revamping later. Tuesday I rode the Harley into work and haven’t stopped thinking about Desolation Road since.

I have a couple different ideas for some of the plots in this story. Actually I have enough plot ideas to go through a few different novels but we’ll see. The biggest thing I need to do is commit to working on it and go with it. If you pay attention to what I say on Twitter there are a few projects that I am currently working on. If I can focus 75% of my attention to this one then I am good.

I’ve jumped back and forth on having various types of zombies in this one or having infected 28 Days Later types in it. Currently leaning towards the zombies but might sway back towards the infected….hard to say at the moment. Either way there are still going to be some mutants in there just because I think it needs some mutants in there.

Below is the back cover write up I threw together to get some things down on paper and get a idea going. It’s a little rough but gives an idea of what the story is about. Nothing is written in stone yet but it is getting there.

Desolation Road Preview

It had been over two years since the virus had spread across the world. It infected the populace turning them into blood thirsty savages as it ravaged their minds and mutated their bodies. Then they died only to rise up again.

The lucky ones died at the onset either by the infection or by one of the multiple nuclear weapons strikes set in motion by the world leaders who decided now was the time to settle their grudges.

The rest were not so lucky. For those who managed to avoid contact with the infected or those who had a natural immunity, they were forced to attempt survival in a land ravaged by hordes of the undead and the fallout of the nuclear exchange

It took only two days for civilization to crumble.

Those remaining humans, the ones with the natural immunity from the virus’s effects or those who managed to avoid contact with the undead lived on despite the odds. Communities formed. Weapons had been horded. The years passed as humanity dwindled. Still, some survived.

Recently the unimaginable started to happen. Those infected by the virus started to fall to the ground. Over a period of days the human survivors watched as the masters of the land stumbled and fell to what looked like their final death. Not all of them fell though. Small numbers of the undead still roamed the lands but not the vast hordes that had held a death grip on what was left of humanity.

All that mattered was they had gone.

As the survivors worked to venture farther from their bunkers and safe houses they found the world as they used to know it had disappeared. Fires and flooding had destroyed cities. Wildlife that had been near extinction due to the human population had started to flourish again. Cities that had been evaporated by nuclear detonations still glowed on the horizon. Mutations from these nuclear attacks had already started reproducing at an alarming rate. Now, the remaining members of civilization either attempted to rebuild or attempted to dominate.

Braving these treacherous roads Kyle Drum set out from those he had spent the last two years with in a search of his daughter. Hope was what kept him going. The experiences he had faced while staring death in the face for the last two years gave him the strength to continue.

Battling the odds, Kyle rides out into the ravaged lands of the once great United States. All along his path lay mutants, cannibals, killers, undead and the needy. They all want something from him while he rides his customized Harley Davidson down Desolation Road.
